NY Beacon: Harlem’s top restaurateurs Joe & Sheron Barnes feted by Harlem Business Alliance

The Harlem Business Alli-ance, Inc. (HBA) which serves asan advocate for the preservationand retention of Harlem’s busi-ness community celebrated its38th annual gala on Thursday,December 8, 2011 in the FacultyDining Hall at The City CollegeOf New York on 138th Street &Convent Avenue. The event fea-tured a lovely reception followedby dinner and an awards cer-emony honoring outstandingcommunity leaders. The galaevent honored Arthur Barnes,National Jazz Museum (chairmanaward); Michael Garner, Metro-politan Transit Authority (gov-ernment service award); CarolGriffin, Griffin Real Estate Group,(business person of the yearaward); Joe & Sheron Barnes,Mobay Uptown Restaurant, (en-trepreneur of the year award);Jackie Rowe Adams, HarlemMothers Save, (community ser-vice award). HBA was foundedin 1980 by a group of prominentHarlem business leaders, and in-corporated in 1990 as a class 402501(c)(3) corporation. HBA hasworked diligently to establishHarlem as an economically self-sustaining community. Over theyears, HBA has developed cohe-sive public/private partnershipsto assist existing and emergingbusinesses, community residentsand youth. The high level of par-ticipation by HBA’s board andmembers enables the non-profitorganization to impact the qual-ity of life in the Harlem commu-nity and to make the collectivevoice of our membership a valu-able part of the decision makingprocess at the local, state and fed-eral levels. HBA’s membership isdiverse and representative of themost influential minority ownedbusinesses in the New York CityMetropolitan area. Major insti-tutions and corporations operat-ing in and around the Harlem com-munity also share membershipwithin HBA. Collaborative effortswith local and out-of-state orga-nizations occur regularly.
